Best Technique to Get Back on Track Quickly So You Can Get More Done

The Best Technique to Get Back on Track Quickly (So You Can Get More Done)

For those times when you need to gain control of your priorities, your to-do pile, and your head-space, this technique can get you organized and taking action!

Sometimes it feels like your messy desk, disorganized to-do list, or chaotic surroundings are making it EVEN HARDER to focus and get things done.  What to do?  You don't want to spend the hours/days it will take to organize everything, but you have to do something!

Especially when you're overwhelmed, you need to take back control.

Despite our best intentions, we all find ourselves situations where productivity is suffering.  You might be familiar with the following common causes of this situation:

  • You had your week perfectly planned out, but by mid-week everything is off track because something new, something forgotten, or something else popped up.
  • Your workspace is contributing to your frustration and draining your energy, maybe because it's a physical mess which is distracting, or your desk set-up is inefficient.
  • You feel disorganized which is making things take longer, like when you can’t remember exactly what’s in the piles on your desk, or which tasks are coming due for certain projects.
  • There are too many things vying for your attention, and you find it hard to remember what you decided to focus on.
When you're ready to get back on track...

Here's what I recommend after working with hundreds of achievers:  Take a reasonable amount of time to organize just the areas you need to in order to move forward.

Specifically, what works for me and many other leaders is to take only 15-20 minutes to tidy up the piles, re-prioritize the to-do list, revisit the goal, or confirm the next few steps of the action plan.

(Caution- don’t let this become a delaying tactic or a reason to not do some "real" work!)

Get it done!

Once you've taken the minimum amount of time to get organized, re-prioritized, or refreshed, decide what to focus on now and ideally choose your next 2-3 steps for maximum impact.  Then, get to work!

Feeling off track and need to get some work done? Especially when you're overwhelmed, you need to take back control. Here's how!
