Leaders: Why can’t you implement strategic goals well?

You spend hours as a leadership team creating an amazing strategic plan to move your company forward and compete in today’s challenging business climate.  You hold off-site meetings, you engage your employees for feedback, and you hold a meeting to discuss the plan with the company.  You're confident you're doing all the right things to get company buy-in and engagement for the successful implementation of your plan.

Unfortunately, for most leaders, 12 months later they can’t understand why their vision was never executed or half the employees can’t articulate the company’s direction.

The fact is implementation of strategic goals is hard, time consuming, and messy. The plans you write down on paper are difficult to make come alive in your company’s day-to-day operating model. Communicating your plan once a year at the annual meeting is not enough to get employees to engage with where you want the company to head.

Organizational change is made up of so many components that are not always easy to see, feel or measure.

A successful company-wide goal involves:

  • Changing attitudes of fear
  • Inspiring new mindsets
  • Restructuring roles or departments
  • Providing meaningful employee training
  • Clarity of the plan
  • Documentation
  • More intentional communication than you can imagine

Depending on the size of the change and the attitude about change within your organization, a strategic goal implementation can take months or even years to implement well.

Also, you cannot focus on managing change, you must lead your employees through the change.

That takes a lot of leadership know-how and power to achieve the results you were envisioning during your September off-site meeting.  Plus your leadership team must be in lock step with the communication plans and be transparent with employees on how your organization plans to get to that vision.
